LaunchPoint Medicare Privacy Concern Impacting Medicare Members

What you need to know. And what we’re doing to protect you.

Amerigroup and its affiliated companies (“Amerigroup”) takes data security and privacy protection seriously. Amerigroup’s Medicare insurance coordination services vendor, LaunchPoint Ventures, LLC, recently found a privacy incident that affects approximately 18,580 Medicare members. If you are affected, LaunchPoint will send you more information in the mail. Meanwhile, Amerigroup will stay in touch with LaunchPoint about the incident.

What Happened?

LaunchPoint handles insurance coordination services for Amerigroup. On April 12, 2017, LaunchPoint learned an employee was likely involved in identity theft related activities. LaunchPoint hired a forensic expert to investigate. On May 28, 2017, LaunchPoint learned some other non-Amerigroup data may have been misused by the employee. LaunchPoint found that the employee emailed a file with protected health information (PHI) to his personal email address on July 8, 2016. This is against LaunchPoint’s policies. The investigation is on-going. LaunchPoint does not know if the email was for a work-related purpose.

What Information Was Involved?

On June 12, 2017, LaunchPoint confirmed the file included Protected Health Information (“PHI”) of Amerigroup members and reported the incident to Amerigroup on June 14, 2017. LaunchPoint does not have any information to suggest that the data on the file was misused.

The personal information in the file contains:

  • Medicare ID numbers, (which includes a Social Security number)
  • Health plan ID numbers (HCID)
  • Medicare contract numbers
  • Dates of enrollment
  • Limited numbers of last names and birthdates

What is LaunchPoint Doing?

LaunchPoint terminated the employee, hired a forensic expert to investigate, and is working with law enforcement. The employee is in prison and is under investigation by law enforcement for matters unrelated to the e-mailed Amerigroup file.

To help impacted members, LaunchPoint is notifying them and offering information on how to better protect against potential identity theft and fraud. They will also have access to two years of credit monitoring and identity theft restoration services with AllClear ID at no cost.

For information on how to enroll in the credit monitoring services, please call the toll-free dedicated assistance line at 1-855-836-1563. It’s available Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT, not including major national holidays.
